Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, found that participants in a long-term behavioral weight loss program experienced negative psychological and behavioral responses to daily weight gain. The study focused on women with BMIs in the overweight/obese range and used ecological momentary assessment surveys and Fitbit data to measure their weight control behavior. The findings suggest that even small weight gain can be distressing and demoralizing for women in weight loss programs, leading to disengagement from their weight control goals. The researchers recommend the potential use of just-in-time adaptive interventions to promote more adaptive responses after weigh-ins in future weight loss interventions.
