Effect of different starting cadences on wingate anaerobic test indices in recreationally active males.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of different starting cadences—specifically 60, 80, 100, and 120 revolutions per minute (rpm)—on performance indices of the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT) in recreationally active males. Results indicate that initiating the WAnT at lower cadences of 60 or 80 rpm yields significantly higher peak power output (PPO) and average power output (AvPO) compared to starting at 100 or 120 rpm. The findings suggest that higher starting cadences may induce greater muscle fatigue during the acceleration phase, reducing anaerobic power in untrained individuals. The study highlights the need to reconsider and standardize the WAnT starting cadence, especially for anaerobically untrained populations, to improve test accuracy and comparability across laboratories.
