Abstract

This article focuses on a survey of emergency medicine pharmacists (EMPs) across the United States regarding vasoactive medication use during advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). The survey found high adherence to American Heart Association (AHA) ACLS guidelines for epinephrine administration during cardiac arrest, with frequent use of adjunct intravenous medications such as calcium, magnesium sulfate, and sodium bicarbonate. Following ROSC, norepinephrine was the preferred vasopressor for managing hypotension, while sodium bicarbonate and antibiotics were commonly used adjunct medications. The study highlights variability in post-ROSC vasopressor practices and underscores the lack of definitive evidence guiding vasopressor selection in this setting, suggesting a need for further multicenter research.
