Abstract
This article focuses on the application of trauma informed care to reduce antepartum complications in survivors of trauma, including adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), sexual assault, domestic violence (DV), and interpersonal violence (IPV). It highlights that trauma history in pregnant individuals is associated with increased risks of miscarriage, preterm birth, post-traumatic stress disorder, placental abruption, premature rupture of membranes, and low birth weight. The article emphasizes the influence of social determinants of health, such as low income, racism, and housing insecurity, on the prevalence of intimate partner violence during pregnancy. Trauma informed care, integrated into midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner (WHNP) practices, aims to reduce psychological symptoms and prevent re-traumatization by addressing clients’ lived experiences. The article concludes that education and training in trauma informed care are essential for future providers to improve pregnancy outcomes for trauma survivors.
