Abstract

The article discusses a study that developed a three-item Peak Experience Scale (PES) to evaluate the strength of the psychoactive experience associated with the psychedelic 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT). Conducted at Maastricht University, the research involved administering a 5-MeO-DMT formulation to healthy volunteers and patients with treatment-resistant depression, assessing their experiences using the PES alongside other established questionnaires. The findings indicated that the PES effectively measures the intensity of the psychedelic experience, showing strong internal consistency and high correlation with other assessment tools. The PES may serve as a rapid assessment tool to guide dosing in clinical settings for psychedelics. [Extracted from the article]
