Abstract

This study focuses on the age distribution of individuals with alcohol and substance use disorders (AUD/SUD) seeking treatment at Ocean State Recovery Center (OSRC) in Rhode Island during 2022. Among 541 patients, 26% were over 50 years old, with older adults represented across nearly all primary diagnoses, highlighting a significant presence of older adults in addiction treatment. The research underscores the underrepresentation of adults aged 65 and older in clinical trials and addiction medicine research, despite their growing population and unique treatment needs. The study advocates for more inclusive, age-sensitive clinical research and treatment approaches to better address the complexities of AUD/SUD in older adults.
