Abstract

The article focuses on the severe flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread displacement, affecting nearly all municipalities in the state. In the aftermath, discussions among medical professionals have emerged regarding the use of benzodiazepines (BZD) for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in affected individuals. The article reviews existing systematic reviews and guidelines, highlighting inconsistencies and controversies surrounding BZD use, particularly their potential harmful effects when administered immediately after traumatic events. It emphasizes the need for evidence-based guidance and suggests that while BZD may not be first-line treatments for PTSD, they could be considered for short-term management of anxiety and insomnia in carefully monitored cases.
