Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of sleep deprivation among leaders and its consequences on both individual performance and employee outcomes. Research shows that many U.S. executives get six or fewer hours of sleep, which impairs judgment, creativity, and emotional regulation, leading to poorer leadership behaviors such as impatience and abusiveness, and negatively affecting subordinate engagement and ethics. Practical solutions include maintaining consistent sleep routines, reducing evening exposure to blue light from screens, treating sleep disorders, and embracing naps, which are culturally accepted in some countries and increasingly adopted by companies like Google. Leaders who prioritize sleep, such as Jeff Bezos and Arianna Huffington, serve as role models, highlighting that adequate rest enhances decision-making and overall workplace effectiveness.
