Abstract

This article examines perceptions of sexual consent communication across diverse sexual orientations and gender identities among college students. Using vignettes depicting ambiguous consent scenarios, participants evaluated the degree of consent given by cisgender, heterosexual characters versus sexual minority characters. Results showed significant differences in perceptions for five of sixteen themes, with sexual minority characters often perceived as consenting more or less than cisgender, heterosexual characters depending on the scenario and role (aggressor or victim). The study suggests that expectations for clear sexual consent communication vary based on the social identities of those involved.
