Abstract
A recent study examined the awareness of skin cancer risk and the use of photoprotection among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who take azathioprine, an immunosuppressive drug. The study surveyed 32 patients and 11 gastroenterology clinicians in England. The results showed that 75% of patients were aware of the link between azathioprine and skin cancer risk, and 66% recalled being counseled on the risk by a clinician. However, the majority of patients had poor photoprotective measures, such as limited sunscreen use and inadequate checking of UVA protection. The study highlights the need for better-targeted preventative measures and increased education for clinicians prescribing azathioprine. [Extracted from the article]
