Abstract
This article examines the relationships among adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), nicotine dependence (ND), and depressive symptom severity in tobacco users living with mental illness (MI). Using a cross-sectional sample of 194 individuals with MI, the study found that ND partially mediates the impact of ACEs on depressive symptoms, while depressive symptoms also partially mediate the effect of ACEs on ND intensity, with these mediation effects differing by gender. Specifically, mediation effects were significant among males but not females, suggesting gender-specific pathways. The findings highlight the importance of integrating depression treatment into tobacco cessation programs and recommend early screening for ACEs and depressive symptoms in tobacco users with MI to improve treatment outcomes.
