Abstract

This article focuses on the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) as a key tool for early detection of colorectal cancer, highlighting its effectiveness and limitations. FIT detects human haemoglobin in stool to identify bleeding from the colon or rectum, but it becomes unreliable for patients with altered bowel anatomy, such as those with colectomies, ileoanal pouches, or inflammatory bowel disease, where benign bleeding can cause false-positive results. Misapplication of FIT in these groups can lead to unnecessary anxiety, inappropriate urgent referrals, and inefficient use of healthcare resources. Nurses play a critical role in interpreting FIT relevance, providing patient reassurance, guiding appropriate specialist referrals, and advocating for tailored screening approaches to ensure patient-centered care and maintain screening program integrity.
