Abstract

This article focuses on research investigating the relationship between alcohol dependence and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults. The study, conducted by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, analyzed data from 1,222 adults with OCD and found that 13% had a lifetime history of alcohol dependence, which was associated with older age, lower educational attainment, and higher rates of mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Individuals with alcohol dependence were less likely to have received treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs/SSRIs) and reported poorer treatment responses. The research highlights the clinical importance of assessing alcohol dependence in OCD patients due to its potential impact on treatment outcomes. [Extracted from the article]
