Abstract
This article focuses on the development and application of Dyadic Cognitive Analytic Therapy (Dyadic CAT) within community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to address transgenerational trauma in young people and their caregivers. Dyadic CAT extends traditional Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), which targets individual relational patterns, by involving both the young person and their caregiver to work on their relationship and shared trauma-related patterns. The approach emphasizes trauma-informed care, addressing power imbalances, and creating a safe therapeutic base, with early evidence suggesting improvements in caregiver-child relationships and the young person's emotional wellbeing. The article highlights the need for further research to refine Dyadic CAT's structure and evaluate its outcomes compared to individual CAT interventions.
