Abstract
This article focuses on a retrospective clinical audit evaluating the real-world effectiveness and tolerability of lamotrigine as a mood stabilizer in patients diagnosed with bipolar II disorder. Among 390 patients reviewed, nearly 90% tolerated lamotrigine, with 11% developing a rash leading to discontinuation, including one severe Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) case. Approximately 44% of patients showed excellent or very good overall mood stabilization, with similar improvement rates for depressive and hypomanic episodes, and no significant influence of treatment duration, age, gender, or prior mood stabilizer use on outcomes. The study highlights limitations such as its retrospective design, single-clinician rating, and non-standardized assessments, and suggests the need for further pragmatic research to assess treatment effectiveness in clinically representative populations.
