Abstract

This article critically examines the Attention Autism (AA) intervention programme, designed to enhance attention, connection, and engagement in autistic children aged birth to eleven, with a focus on improving joint attention skills. A systematic review of five UK- and Ireland-based studies found that while all reported positive effects of AA on joint attention, significant concerns exist regarding intervention fidelity, methodological rigor, and variability in implementation, limiting confidence that improvements are attributable specifically to AA. The intervention aligns theoretically with joint attention, social motivation, and monotropism frameworks, emphasizing the use of motivating objects and structured stages to build sustained attention. The review highlights the need for more rigorous research with strict adherence to AA training protocols to clarify its effectiveness and informs professionals about the importance of evidence-based practice and fidelity in delivering autism interventions.
