Abstract
This article evaluates factors associated with alcohol abuse in Peru using data from the 2019 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES). Among 24,264 Peruvians aged 18 to 59, the prevalence of alcohol abuse was 5.2%, with higher prevalence linked to higher education, being widowed/separated/divorced, higher socioeconomic status, residence in the Sierra (highlands) or Selva (jungle) regions, lack of health insurance, current smoking, and major depression. Conversely, being female, middle-aged (30–59 years), and initiating alcohol consumption after age 18 were associated with lower prevalence. The study highlights the need for targeted regional and national strategies to reduce alcohol abuse and its related health consequences in Peru.
