Abstract
This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the effects of reminiscence therapy on loneliness among older adults. Based on 22 studies, including 14 randomized controlled trials with 1,039 participants, the meta-analysis found that reminiscence therapy significantly reduces loneliness, with group-based interventions and those led by professional facilitators showing greater effectiveness. Both simple reminiscence and life review therapy types were effective, though high heterogeneity among studies suggests variability in outcomes. The review highlights the importance of tailored intervention designs, including appropriate themes and stimuli, and calls for further research to optimize and sustain the benefits of reminiscence therapy in diverse older adult populations.
