Abstract

Researchers at the University of Wasit have published a report on the multifaceted roles of melatonin in sleep disorders. Melatonin is a hormone protein that helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle or circadian rhythm, making it crucial for sleep regulation. The synthesis of melatonin primarily occurs in the pineal gland, but it has also been observed in other parts of the body. The research reviews recent findings on the role of melatonin in sleep disorders such as insomnia, delayed sleep phase disorder, jet lag, and shift work sleep disorder. It also discusses the use of melatonin agonists and novel therapeutic targets to manipulate melatonin receptors. The paper provides new perspectives for the prevention and treatment of sleep disorders. [Extracted from the article]
