Manipulation of plant RNA biology by geminiviruses.

Abstract

The article focuses on the intricate interactions between plant DNA geminiviruses and host RNA biology during viral infection. Geminiviruses, which have single-stranded DNA genomes, rely on host transcriptional machinery for viral gene expression and manipulate RNA-related processes such as transcription, RNA splicing, and RNA silencing to promote infection and virulence. These viruses encode multifunctional proteins that suppress plant antiviral RNA silencing mechanisms at multiple levels, while some viral transcripts undergo splicing to expand coding capacity. Despite advances, many molecular details of how geminiviruses hijack RNA biology remain unclear, highlighting open questions about transcription initiation, splicing prevalence, and the biological significance of multiple viral suppressors of RNA silencing.
