Abstract
This article focuses on the relationship between dietary protein intake and body composition in Spanish sport climbing athletes undergoing prolonged energy restriction. The study found that athletes with adequate or higher protein intake had significantly lower fat mass (FM) and better climbing performance scores (IRCRA), despite experiencing less severe energy deficits, while lean mass remained similar across groups. Notably, only male climbers showed significant differences in FM related to protein intake adequacy. The findings suggest that higher protein intake may help maintain lean mass and support quality weight management in energy-restricted climbers, particularly males, though longitudinal research is needed to confirm these effects.
