Abstract
The article focuses on evaluating the Trypan Blue Exclusion Method (TBEM) as an alternative technique to assess ruminal protozoa counts (PROT) and viability (VIAB) in beef cattle, which are linked to methane (CH4) emissions. Two experiments tested TBEM under different culture conditions and feed additives, including yeast fermentation products, tannins, cashew nutshell extract, and citral. Results showed that TBEM effectively detected changes in protozoa viability and counts, correlating reductions in protozoa with decreased methane production and gas output. The study concludes that TBEM is a simple, rapid, and cost-effective method to evaluate protozoa viability and membrane integrity, offering advantages over traditional methyl-green-formalin-saline fixation methods.
