Abstract
This article focuses on medication safety counseling practices among pediatric primary care clinicians, highlighting gaps particularly in counseling about safe medication disposal. A web-based survey of 40 clinicians from two mid-Atlantic health care systems found that while most clinicians routinely counsel on medication storage and administration—especially for younger children—safe disposal is rarely addressed. Respondents reported feeling less knowledgeable and comfortable providing guidance on disposal and identified lack of time, training, and resources as barriers to comprehensive counseling. The study underscores the need for additional clinician education and development of standardized tools to improve medication safety counseling, with an emphasis on safe disposal to reduce pediatric medication exposures and poisonings.
