Abstract

This article focuses on the decision-making process of adolescent athletes regarding symptom reporting following sports-related concussion (SRC). It reviews three main theories explaining symptom underreporting: the Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior, Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, and the Disclosure Decision-Making Model, highlighting their clinical relevance and limitations. The article emphasizes that these theories do not adequately address neurodevelopmental factors, such as the adolescent imbalance between cognitive control and reward processing. It concludes that effective education for parents and coaches should incorporate socioemotional, cultural, environmental, and neurodevelopmental considerations to improve symptom disclosure and subsequent care.
