Abstract
Scientists from the United States and France have mapped a network in the brain called the default ascending arousal network (dAAN) for the first time. The dAAN is responsible for supporting the resting or default state of arousal and is found in subcortical regions of the brain, starting in the brainstem. The researchers also found that the dAAN is connected to various cortical networks. This discovery provides valuable insights into the brain's mechanisms of consciousness and wakefulness.
