Abstract

This article focuses on the development and evaluation of a hand sanitizer gel formulated with Quercus infectoria (Qi) gall extract, a traditional Southeast Asian medicinal plant known for its antimicrobial properties. The Qi hand sanitizer gel demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, effectively inhibiting various multidrug-resistant bacteria, fungi including dermatophytes, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with efficacy comparable to commercial alcohol-based sanitizers. Safety assessments showed no cytotoxicity on fibroblast cells, and skin permeation studies indicated that the gel's active compounds permeate skin layers without penetrating subcutaneous tissue. Additionally, the formulation remained physically and chemically stable under various storage conditions, supporting its potential as a safe, plant-based alternative for hand hygiene in healthcare and general settings.
