Abstract

This article focuses on a quality improvement project evaluating a nurse-initiated telephone care path designed to manage pain in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) receiving radiation therapy. The intervention involved nurses calling patients 48–72 hours after pain medication was prescribed, using a six-question assessment to monitor pain levels and medication effectiveness. Results showed a decrease in hospital admissions and emergency department visits postintervention, suggesting improved pain management, although patient-reported pain scores increased over the course of treatment. Limitations included inconsistent adherence to the telephone call schedule due to staffing challenges.
