Abstract

This article focuses on the prevalence and clinical correlates of methamphetamine (METH) use among patients seeking addiction treatment in Turkey. Among 788 patients interviewed at an addiction center, 48.9% reported METH use, with 24.4% using it daily. METH users frequently experienced psychotic symptoms such as visual hallucinations (34.3%), auditory hallucinations (38.2%), paranoid delusions (55.6%), as well as agitation (39.7%), spontaneous skin wounds (40.8%), and oral/dental lesions known as "METH mouth" (37.1%), all of which increased with usage frequency. Logistic regression identified pregabalin use and polysubstance use as independent predictors of METH use. The study highlights the rising METH use in Turkey and associated psychiatric and dermatological complications, emphasizing the need for preventive measures and further research.
