Abstract

The article focuses on the evolving potential of telemedicine in the United States, emphasizing that its future growth depends on integrating more clinical capabilities into patients' homes through advanced technologies and services. Despite a decline in telemedicine visits since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, innovations such as connected devices, at-home diagnostic services, and implanted health monitors are expanding remote care beyond traditional virtual visits. Challenges remain, including cost, ease of use, and health equity, particularly for older adults and underserved populations, which may be addressed through hybrid care models combining virtual and in-person support. The article highlights the importance of combining technology with human interaction and calls on health care providers, insurers, and employers to prepare for and facilitate this next phase of telemedicine.
