Abstract

The article focuses on a study conducted in Gdansk, Poland, which evaluates the procedure for collecting saliva to measure salivary cortisol levels in dogs, particularly regarding the potential stress induced by this collection in unfamiliar settings. The research involved 19 companion dogs and aimed to develop animal-friendly methodologies for assessing stress, highlighting the importance of caregiver presence in reducing stress indicators. Findings indicated that while most dogs experienced mild to moderate stress during saliva collection, no extreme reactions were noted, and challenges such as variability in saliva production were identified. The study proposes a standardized protocol for saliva collection that prioritizes animal welfare and offers insights for future interdisciplinary research involving non-human subjects.
