Another Look at Fatigued Individuals with and without Chronic Ankle Instability: Posturography and Proprioception.

Abstract

This article focuses on the effects of anaerobic and aerobic fatigue protocols on the function of the three sensory systems—vestibular, visual, and somatosensory—that control postural balance in individuals with and without chronic ankle instability (CAI). Using Tetrax® posturography and the Active Movement Extent Discrimination Assessment (AMEDA), the study found that fatigue impaired all three sensory systems in both groups, with greater deterioration in passive and active somatosensory abilities among those with CAI. No significant differences were observed between anaerobic and aerobic protocols except for improved active somatosensory ability following aerobic exercise. The findings suggest the need for targeted intervention programs to enhance vestibular, visual, and somatosensory function after fatigue, particularly in individuals with CAI.
