Abstract

The article is a book review of "Coercive Control in Children's and Mothers' Lives" by Dr. Emma Katz. The book explores the experiences of children who have been subjected to coercive control and the road to recovery for both children and mothers who have experienced this form of abuse. The book challenges the previous model of domestic violence by considering the full extent of the additional harms caused by coercive control. It provides in-depth analysis of the research findings and offers recommendations for change. The book's focus on the recovery of mother-child relationships is a unique contribution to the field. However, the typologies and frameworks introduced in the book are based solely on the 15 families who participated in the study, so caution must be taken when applying the findings to a wider population. Overall, the book provides valuable insights for professionals working with survivors of coercive control and emphasizes the importance of reframing commonly held beliefs and languages used in relation to children, mothers, and perpetrators.
