Abstract

This article focuses on research examining the interactions between symptom trajectories, conduct disorder (CD), and pharmacotherapy in relation to violent behavior among individuals with schizophrenia. Conducted by the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research in Orangeburg, New York, the study involved 99 patients with schizophrenia and assaultive behaviors who were treated with clozapine, olanzapine, or haloperidol. Findings indicated that patients with CD exhibited higher aggression levels, and that reductions in violence were linked to symptom improvements, with medication effects varying by drug type. The research highlights the complex causes of violence in schizophrenia and underscores the need for individualized treatment strategies to reduce violence in high-risk populations.
