Abstract

The article examines how book "Astrophil and Stella" and "The Temple" can be interpreted as providing amused advice for overcoming writer's block, challenging the perception of self-conscious inadequacy in poetry. It discusses Zachary Leader's psychoanalytic approach to writer's block and its historical development in the 18th century, and the "modesty topos" in early modern texts.
