Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating the diagnosis and classification of wisdom teeth as Dental Readiness Classification (DRC) 3—a designation indicating urgent or emergency dental treatment needs—in U.S. Army soldiers to reduce dental disease and nonbattle injuries (D-DNBIs) during deployments. A retrospective chart review of 148 soldiers found that 58% were classified as DRC 3 based on criteria including caries, pericoronitis, infection, and pathology, with caries and pericoronitis being the most frequent conditions. The study revealed a very low inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s κ = 0.04) among Army dentists in assigning DRC 3 status, indicating inconsistency in diagnosis. The findings suggest that standardized diagnostic criteria and early treatment, especially before deployment, could improve dental readiness and reduce medical evacuations related to wisdom tooth issues.
