Abstract

This article reports on a triple-blind randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of systemic antibiotic prophylaxis in immunocompetent patients undergoing two-stage dental implant surgery. Sixty-one healthy patients were assigned to three groups: no antibiotics (control), preoperative amoxicillin only, and pre- plus postoperative amoxicillin. Results showed that antibiotic use reduced pain intensity and analgesic consumption in the first 7 days post-surgery but did not significantly affect infection rates or implant failure at 120 days. The study concludes that a single preoperative antibiotic dose may be sufficient for healthy patients receiving two-stage implants without additional procedures, as extended antibiotic use did not confer added benefits in preventing infection or implant loss.
