Abstract

This article investigates self-oriented face-saving strategies employed by celebrity interviewees on the Chinese talk show *Yang Lan One-on-One* in response to face-threatening acts (FTAs) posed by the interviewer, Yang Lan. Using qualitative analysis of 126 instances from over 400 episodes, the study identifies twelve distinct strategies, including explaining, contradicting, giving positive value to self, and gender-specific tactics such as males giving negative value to others and females redefining negative labels. The research highlights the complexity of managing face in a public, dual-audience context—both the interviewer and the viewing public—and contributes to understanding (im)politeness strategies within a non-Western cultural framework. It also underscores how cultural norms and gender roles influence the choice of face-saving strategies in high-profile media interactions.
