Abstract
This article focuses on the quantitative assessment of signal intensity (SI) changes in the left piriform cortex and amygdala (PC&A) on T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (T2W-FLAIR) magnetic resonance images in relation to aging and probable Alzheimer's disease (pAD). The study retrospectively analyzed SI ratios in younger controls, older controls without cognitive impairment, and pAD patients, finding a significant increase in left PC&A SI with age and in pAD, while the right PC&A showed no such change. These findings suggest that increased left PC&A SI may reflect neuroinflammatory deterioration associated with aging and early AD pathology. The study highlights the potential of left PC&A SI changes as an imaging biomarker for aging-related and AD-related brain changes, though it notes limitations including the retrospective design and the need for longitudinal studies.
