Abstract

The article focuses on the upcoming Medicare Part D price reductions for three oral anticancer agents—enzalutamide (prostate cancer), palbociclib (breast cancer), and acalabrutinib (leukemia and lymphoma)—which will cost patients 40% to 50% less starting January 1, 2027. These reductions are part of the Medicare Price Negotiation Program, established under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, allowing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to negotiate fair prices for high-cost drugs without generic or biosimilar alternatives. Approximately 66,000 Medicare Part D patients using these anticancer drugs will benefit from the savings, which contribute to a broader $12 billion net reduction in Medicare drug spending. The negotiated prices remain in effect as long as the drugs are included in the program, with annual adjustments based on inflation. The article also notes ongoing advocacy efforts, such as the Cancer Drug Parity Act, aimed at ensuring equitable insurance coverage for oral anticancer medications.
