Diurnal variation in salivary testosterone independent of food consumption.

Abstract

This article investigates the diurnal variation of salivary testosterone (Sal T) independent of food consumption in healthy adult males. The study found that Sal T levels exhibit an inherent circadian rhythm, with significantly higher concentrations in the morning (around 09:00 h) compared to evening hours, even after an 8-hour fast, indicating that this variation is not influenced by meals. These findings suggest that the optimal time for Sal T sample collection is in the early morning and highlight the potential need for time-specific reference intervals. The study involved 17 eugonadal males and used passive drool saliva collection analyzed by Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry.
