Abstract

The article focuses on addressing the increasing Quantity Not Sufficient (QNS) rates in blood donations at upper Midwest blood centers, which rose from 3.6% to 4.5% between March 2020 and March 2022 due to phlebotomy challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study reviewed non-successful donations from January 2020 to June 2022, categorizing them into failed venipunctures, blood loss, and donor reactions. Observations revealed that many phlebotomists were not offering donors the option to use both arms for cannulation, leading to a reliance on donor preference without proper inspection. Following the reinforcement of standard operating procedures (SOP) and the introduction of a vein viability form, the QNS rate improved from 5.05% in January 2022 to 4.18% by November 2022, indicating a successful intervention in phlebotomy practices.
