Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating the utility of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to identify neurocognitive deficits in adult patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). In a sample of 24 adults attending a multidisciplinary SCD clinic, 58.43% were found to have cognitive impairments ranging from mild to moderate, with cognitive scores declining as age increased. The study highlights the potential of the MoCA as a screening tool for cognitive deficits in this population but calls for further research to validate its effectiveness across varying impairment levels. These findings underscore the need for improved cognitive assessment and care strategies for adults with SCD, a group with limited existing resources.
