Hepcidin/Ferritin Ratio in Patients with Beta Thalassemia. A Single-Center Experience.

Abstract
The article focuses on the evaluation of various biomarkers in pediatric hematologic and hepatic conditions. It reports that tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels are significantly elevated in hemophilia patients with arthropathy compared to controls, while ferritin levels do not differ significantly. In beta-thalassemia syndromes, serum hepcidin and the hepcidin/ferritin ratio vary between beta-thalassemia major and intermedia, with higher hepcidin levels and lower ratios observed in more severe disease, correlating with transfusion needs. Additionally, serum autotaxin (ATX) levels are markedly increased in children with chronic liver disease and correlate positively with disease severity scores and fibrosis stages. These findings suggest potential roles for TNF-α, hepcidin/ferritin ratio, and autotaxin as biomarkers in managing these pediatric conditions.
