Abstract

This article focuses on the development and pilot testing of Living Memory Home for Dementia Care Pairs (LMH-4-DCP), a web-based platform created by researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine and the University of Southern California to support family caregivers and persons with dementia. LMH-4-DCP facilitates structured reminiscence through an interactive, privacy-protected virtual environment designed to strengthen caregiver-patient bonds and reduce pre-death grief, a form of emotional distress experienced during a loved one’s cognitive decline. In a pilot trial involving 34 caregiver-patient pairs, the platform was found to be user-friendly and effective in significantly reducing caregiver grief severity over two weeks compared to a control group. The researchers plan to conduct a larger, longer clinical trial to further evaluate LMH-4-DCP’s impact and develop tools to assess grief in persons with dementia themselves.
