Abstract

This article examines the prevalence and significance of lived experience—personal experience of mental illness or trauma—among mental health professionals and its impact on mental health services. Research indicates that a substantial proportion of clinicians, including doctors and psychologists, have their own histories of mental health challenges, which can enhance empathy, reduce stigma, and improve therapeutic outcomes. Historical figures in psychiatry, such as Melanie Klein, John Bowlby, and Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, exemplify how personal experiences have shaped influential contributions to the field. Despite benefits demonstrated by integrating lived experience into mental health care, barriers such as stigma and tokenism persist, highlighting the need for cultural and organizational changes to better support and include clinicians and peer workers with lived experience.
