Abstract
This article focuses on the molecular mechanisms of chloroplast ribosome assembly, tracing its evolutionary origins from an ancient endosymbiotic event involving a cyanobacterium and a eukaryotic host. It details the composition and maturation of chloroplast ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) and ribosomal proteins (RPs), highlighting the roles of various ribonucleases, RNA helicases, GTPases, RNA chaperones, and other auxiliary factors in rRNA processing and ribosome biogenesis. The review emphasizes the functional conservation and divergence of these factors compared to their bacterial counterparts, as well as the emergence of plant-specific proteins that facilitate chloroplast adaptation to environmental stresses such as cold and salt. Finally, it discusses current challenges and future directions in chloroplast ribosome research, including the application of advanced proteomic and sequencing technologies to better understand ribosome assembly dynamics and their implications for plant survival and acclimation.
