Abstract

This article focuses on teaching poetry about brokenness and loss through the works of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and Chinese poet Bei Dao. Using Neruda’s "Ode to Broken Things," students explore the naturalness of breakage and the possibilities of repair, while Bei Dao’s "Comet" addresses themes of departure and loss, encouraging reflection on what leaves and what might return. The teaching approach involves engaging students in creating lists and writing their own poems using imagery and tools from the poems, fostering a nuanced understanding of emotional and physical fragmentation. Through this process, students learn to express complex feelings about change, absence, and healing in poetic form. [Extracted from the article]
