Abstract

This article compares the sedative effects of nebulized dexmedetomidine and intramuscular ketamine as premedication in pediatric patients aged 2 to 8 years undergoing hernia repair surgery. The study found that dexmedetomidine provided smoother parental separation and better acceptance of the anesthesia face mask, with a shorter recovery time, while sedation levels were similar between the two drugs. However, emergence agitation was more frequent with dexmedetomidine, and it was associated with a higher incidence of bradycardia. These findings highlight differences in efficacy and side effects between the two premedication methods in pediatric anesthesia.
