Abstract
This article addresses the challenge leaders face when their genuine emotions conflict with the emotions they are expected to display in their roles. It outlines four techniques to help leaders manage this emotional labor: reappraising situations to align feelings with expected emotions, focusing on the larger purpose of their work, conducting emotional audits to increase self-awareness, and taking time to reconnect and replenish through support and self-compassion. The article emphasizes that while emotional labor is essential for effective leadership, especially for women and people of color, it should not come at the leader's personal expense. These strategies aim to help leaders maintain authenticity, well-being, and effectiveness in complex organizational environments.
