Abstract

This article focuses on the experiences of burden among family caregivers of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors. Using qualitative focus group interviews with 25 family caregivers attending a rehabilitation course in Denmark, the study identified three main themes: feeling unexpectedly alone and invisible due to emotional isolation and lack of recognition; a persistent fear of losing their loved one leading to anxiety and hypervigilance; and the challenge of adjusting to a new everyday life shaped by the survivor’s physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments. The findings highlight the complex emotional, social, and practical burdens faced by caregivers and emphasize the need for healthcare systems to acknowledge, measure, and address caregiver burden through systematic involvement and support as part of post-cardiac arrest care.
